    Ilic, Aleksandarz

"The Mallet was shot by accident. At the time I was working on a film on agriculture in Yugoslavia, requested by 'Jugoslavija Publik' . . . I saw this conveyor belt where the workers were selecting chicklets. Black chicklets were progressing weakly in the growth process, so the 'genetic department' would eliminate them. And if any of the black chicklets would get to the belt it would end up in a container, under the mallet. They were favorising 'the whites'. The whole act was horrible. It reminded me on Hitler's times, concentration camps. . . anyone would give it a different significance or metaphor."

Although Ivens is "generally considered to be one of only a handful of truly great documentary filmmakers, history and politics have conspired to make most of his work unavailable and unknown in this country. I suppose some would argue that this was partly Ivens's fault - because he had the bad taste to become a communist filmmaker, and to work for much of his life in communist countries as opposed to the "free world." Unfortunately, the freedoms granted in our "free world" haven't yet included the opportunity to see most of Ivens's work. He's made more than 60 films, including antifascist work, work supporting Indonesian independence (which led to the withdrawal of his Dutch passport), and work in collaboration with Ernest Hemingway, Jacques Prevert, Gerard Philipe, Lewis Milestone, Frank Capra, Jean-Luc Godard, William Klein, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, and Agnes Varda (the last five worked with him on the 1967 sketch film Far From Vietnam). He died during the early summer of 1989, just before most of the communist world in the West collapsed.

As critic David Thomson once put it, Ivens "is like one of those long-serving suitcases held together by the labels of a lifetime's travel," and his lifetime's travel virtually constitutes a 20th-century history of socialist aspirations". - Jonathan Rosenbaum

    Erice, Victor
    Kiarostami, Abbas

The centerpiece of this exhibition and installation is the 10 video-letters Erice and Kiarostami have been exchanging over the past 3 years. Both filmmakers who happen to share the same age of 67 are discreet and introverted interacted artistically by investing the short format of video-essay.

Although rejected by the curators, Erice selected the following films to supplement his filmography:

    Ménilmontant

    Kirsanoff, Dimitri

One of the earliest silent "films to completely refrain from using explanatory titles, Ménilmontant is a powerful psychological deconstruction and an impressive and beautiful experimental film. The imagery in this film explores a range of textures, atmospheres and moods, defying storyline with its abstract nature. The film also serves as an impression of conflicting day and night characters of Paris - the hustle and bustle of the urban city by day, and the seedy night-time of dark cobblestone alleyways, crime and prostitution. It tells the tale of two sisters who move to the suburb of Ménilmontant in Paris after the brutal and shocking murder of their parents, and traces their involvement with the city's working class, and their encounters with poverty, loneliness and death." -

    GRIGORI KOZINTSEV
Grigori Mikhaylovich Kozintsev was a Jewish Ukrainian, Soviet Russian artist, theatre and film director. He was among the founders of the notorious Factory of Eccentric Actors. He collaborated with director Leonid Trauberg in films as the satirical New Babylon (1931). The two remained together until just after producing the post-war drama Plain People, a 1945 film that was not released by authorities until the mid '50s. Kozintsev and Trauberg split up shortly after the government banned the film. As a solo director Kozintsev became known for making faithful film adaptations of popular literature including the works of Shakespeare and Cervantes. His 1964 film of Hamlet and 1972 film of King Lear are considered the best film adaptations of these Shakespeare plays. Kozintsev was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1964.

    Hamlet

Of Hamlet, Kozintsev on Hamlet: "It is quite possible and permissible, to make an academic production of the play, but I think at the same time Shakespeare needs a kind of new, individual interpretation.Every new effort of every generation creates a new aspect of this character. A new aspect of history, the spirit of poetry, the sense of humanity, should be modern and absolutely lifelike for audiences today . . . I shall try to show the general feelings, the general philosophy of the poetry, but I shall not use the medium of traditional theatre staging. I want to go the way of the cinema . .." - Sokolyansky, Grigori Kozintsev's Hamlet and King Lear, p. 204.

Kozintsev told Ronald Hayman in the Summer 1973 issue of the Transatlantic Review: "When Lear goes mad at the beginning of the storm scene, this is the beginning of an absolutely new relationship with nature. I try to illustrate with this landscape a country which is not bare, not cruel. I try to show Lear himself as a part of nature, in a field of flowers. His hair spreads like moss, the grey hair of nature. Once man is seen as a part of nature, the movement towards regeneration can begin. Cordelia too has her own landscapem- sea and a very wide landscape - with waves and seagulls. All the important characters have their own atmosphere and there are relationships not just on the level of character but between different aspects of nature."

    Lang, Fritz

PART I: Young Siegfried understood the bird's song: If the dragon slayer would bathe in the dragon's blood, his body would become invincible, forever safe against word and spear.

While traveling to Worms to propose to Kriemhild, the sister of King Gunther, Siegfried kills a dragon and becomes invincible in all but one spot by bathing in its blood; he also captures the dwarfish Nibelungen's hoard of treasure, and acquires a magic helmet which makes him invisible. In payment for Kriemhild's hand, King Gunther asks for Siegfried's help in winning the mighty Brunhild as his wife - but when Brunhild discovers that Siegfried has used magic to trick her into marriage, she seeks revenge . . .
PART II: Earth, you were once soaked in Siegfried's blood. One day I shall come and drench you with the blood of Hagen Tronje!.

The grieving widow Kriemhild agrees to marry Attila the Hun . . . After the birth of their son, Kriemhild invites her brother and Hagen Tronje for a visit, intending to have Tronje killed; but when Attila refuses to harm his guests, the single-minded Kriemhild enlists the help of local Huns in seeking bloody revenge on the man who killed her husband.

"Critics have been name-dropping experimental filmmakers in their efforts to describe the visual grammar of Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, but the movie's end credits point the most clearly to direct influences. The abstract, shifting light imagery used as a primary motif in the movie, for example, is the credited Opus 161 "Untitled" (1966), a key Lumia by Thomas Wilfred (1889-1968), a Danish pioneer who performed such works with a "light organ" he invented. Wilfred toured throughout the US and Europe in the 1920s and '30s, and later recorded Lumia for museum exhibitions." - The Secret Experiments in "The Tree of LIfe"

In Audition (a horror film) Shigeharu Aoyama, a middle-aged man who lost his wife to an illness, is urged by his son to begin dating women again. Aoyama's friend and colleague, a film producer, devises a plan to hold a mock-audition, in which young, beautiful women would audition for the "part" of Aoyama's new wife, under the impression that they are auditioning for a new film. . .

  • ULRIKE OTTINGER
"Deliriously sumptuous and transgressive, Ulrike Ottinger's world can hardly be confused with humdrum reality. Watching her films is like traveling through an undiscovered country of marvels, a journey alternately dazzling, infuriating, hilarious, and rewarding. Mongolian nomads, feral feminists, and Shanghai and Jewish culture rub elbows in the oeuvre of a unique filmmaker who combines an outlaw's spirit and an ethnographer's eye with an artist's sense of wonder"
    Leslie Camhi
    The Village Voice

Unlike any adventure yarn one has seen before, this feminist lesbian pirate movie's objective is to reinterpret the genre and parody its conventions. The result is an unforgettable spectacle. Madame X, the self-proclaimed ruler of the China Sea, accompanied by her servant and occasional lover, Hoi-Sin, calls on the oppressed women of the world to leave behind their drudgery and cruise the high seas. The one-armed, leather attired Madame X - described by the ship's psychologist Karla Frued Goldman as "a charismatic personality consumed by narcissism, whose lust for power grows" - leads her motley group into both sexual and social exploration. A lesbian cult classic.

    SERGEI PARAJANOV

Probably, besides the film language suggested by Griffith and Eisenstein, the world cinema has not discovered anything revolutionarily new until [Parajanov's] The Color of Pomegranates (1968) - Mikhail Vartanov

SERGEI (Iosifovich) PARAJANOV (1924-1990) is significantly less known than his peers Fellini, Tarkovsky, Antonioni, Godard, though, at various times, these great filmmakers have called Parajanov a "genius," a "master" and a "magician." . . He was born on the 9th of January 1924 in an artistic family of the Armenian merchant Iosif (Hovsep) Parajanian and Siranush Bejanov (Bejanian), in the city of Tiflis, Soviet Union (USSR), now Tbilisi, Georgia. . .

In 1942, Sergei Parajanov graduated from the high school and . . . in 1945, came to Moscow's prestigious film school (VGIK). His professors were Igor Savchenko, a well-known Soviet director ("Garmon" 1934), and later the great Alexadner Dovzhenko ("Earth" 1930). He was arrested for the first time in 1947 and spent several months in a Georgian prison on charges of homosexuality.

. . . in 1948 -1949, Sergei Parajanov worked on 2 films by Igor Savchenko ("Third Blow" and "Taras Shevchenko"), then with Vladimir Broun (Brown) on ("Maksimka" 1951). In 1952, Paradjanov made his first short film Moldavian Tale and remade it with Yakov Bazelyan nto a feature length film Andriesh in 1955. . .

  • Paris, Je T'aime
"Paris, je t'aime" is about the plurality of cinema in one mythic location: Paris, the City of Love. Twenty filmmakers have five minutes each; the audience must weave a single narrative out of twenty moments. The 20 moments are fused by transitional interstitial sequences and also via the introduction and epilogue. Each transition begins with the last shot of the previous film and ends with the first shot of the following film, extending the enchantment and the emotion of the previous segment, preparing the audience for a surprise, and providing a cohesive atmosphere. There's a reappearing mysterious character who is a witness to the Parisian life. A common theme of Paris and love fuses all." Emmanuel Benbihy

The filmmaker works with his images as if they were a musical score. Around a central theme, he orchestrates variations and modulations that create an impression of a flood of private images arriving from beyond the frame. Pelechian is making a name for himself as a montage filmmaker who tends to inscribe in his works the movement of the world and history. His films are odes, even symphonies that speak about humanity, nature and the cosmos. Man is often seen contending with a strong, encompassing nature that guides, transports and protects him. Pelechian speaks to us about humility and our connection with time. Artavazd Pelechian has been practicing a method of film construction he refers to as "distance montage" since the 60s, in films using either found footage, Our Century or original material, The Seasons. In the early 90s, Pelechian made two spiritual films which are among his simplest and most beautiful productions: The End (1991) and Life (1992), Pelechian's first colour film. Where The End looks towards death, Life is about a birth, consisting mainly of views of a young woman's face in the throes of labour, her heaving body in its hospital room seen as a changing landscape. Two shifts take place: the child is born and the camera shows us this new life; then, in a final shot that re-orders the entire film in retrospect (like the final shot of Pelechian's earlier portrait of peasant life, The Seasons), we see mother and child, faces side-by-side perhaps a year later, mirrors of one another save for the difference in age.

"Seasons of the Year" (1975) was the last collaboration of Armenia's two most important documentary auteurs: Artavazd Peleshian and Mikhail Vartanov. The first was Autumn Pastoral (1971) written by Peleshian and directed by Vartanov. Peleshian's brilliant "Seasons of the Year" is one of the three most important documentary films made in Armenia along with Sergei Parajanov's Hakob Hovnatanyan and Vartanov's Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992). "Seasons of the Year" is an outstanding look at the co-existence of nature and people and is the first film made by Peleshian without the use of archival footage thanks to Vartanov's exquisite cinematography and wizardry in the lab. Eight years had passed before Peleshian made another film.
