Although Helen West Heller did not consider herself a modernist. Modernism, in the cultural historical sense, is can be defined as the new artistic and literary styles that emerged in the decades before 1914. On February 15th, 1913, the first avant-garde art show (Armory Show) in America opened in NYC. Modernist artists rebelled against the late19th century norms of depiction and literary form, in an attempt to present what they regarded as an emotionally truer picture of how people really feel and think.
